Siemens Gigaset Designer Digital Cordless Phone with Color Display, Bluetooth Connectivity and Answering System (SL785) Review

Siemens Gigaset Designer Digital Cordless Phone with Color Display, Bluetooth Connectivity and Answering System (SL785)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've gone through a number of dissatisfying $100 Panasonic 2.4GHz phones, and tried a Philips VOIP841 (terribly scratchy audio), and decided that maybe I should just buy a higher end model to get some actual quality.
I bought this and an extra handset (SL78H), and I am generally happy with its performance. Our apartment is 70' x 21', in an old brownstone with numerous plaster/brick walls. I originally had the basestation in our home-office at one end of the apartment, and was experiencing some drop off at the other side of the house. I corrected this by moving the basestation into the next room over, so now it's fine at 55' in one direction, and 15' in the other.
The audio is very good, and of course the styling is nice, too. Here are my issues with the phone:
1) The Caller ID list shows numbers and when, but NOT names. You have to further scroll and click on an entry to see name details. The screen is so high resolution, the phone could easily have a third line of info or be more efficient with space. There is a LOT of dead space in the call list.
2) From the screensaver, getting the in/out call list requires a minimum of **4** clicks, and optionally a scroll, to get to. This is ridiculous, and should have a soft or hard key from the "home" screen
3) Only one handset can view the call list at a time. If one handset is looking at the call list, the other will just beep at you if you try to do the same.
4) The screensaver should have an option to overlay info like the time/date
5) I bought a Plantronics Voyager Pro specifically to use with this phone. Most of the time it's great and they get along well. But maybe 1 out of 4 times I they unpair, and then I have to actually restart the phone to get them to work together again. I am using them within 4' of each other. The Plantronics works FINE with my Blackberry Bold, never an issue.
6) Wireless transfer over BT is SLOOOOOOOW. Moving a 200K screensaver took like a minute. This is probably a general problem with BT. If you want faster, then you have to remove the back cover (!!!) to get to the USB port.
Now despite those frustrations, I'd still recommend the phone if you don't mind spending the coin. That is, the basestation w/phone plus another phone makes for around $320. It performs better than any other cordless I've had, and looks better, too.

IOGear 2-Port USB KVM Switch with Cables and Remote GCS22U (Black) Review

IOGear 2-Port USB KVM Switch with Cables and Remote GCS22U (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This KVM is fine, IOGear makes pretty good products. I am writing this just to provide a few comparison notes on the few but important differences between this and it's slightly more mature sibling the GCS632U.
1) This KVM does not offer any keyboard shortcut. There is a little wired "remote" connected to the KVM, and you must click the button when you want to change from one machine to the next. This does not seem ideal to me, because your hands must leave the keyboard and I would worry about the clicky switch failing over time. The GCS632U offers a typical "double scroll-lock tap" to change over, and this can be changed to another keypress as desired. I find this works much better than this unit's remote button setup.
2) This KVM has cables that connect to the monitor port and TWO USB ports on each target computer. The GCS632U one-ups this in a neat trick; it combines the keyboard and mouse inputs into ONE USB cable, so it only takes up ONE USB port on each target computer. Very nice, and fewer cables to plug in. This feature alone is actually enough for me to return the GCS22U for the upgraded GCS632U.
3) Last, but not least, the GCS632U adds 1/8" plugs for audio. I personally don't use this, but for those who want to connect a single pc speaker system (or other audio output) to the two target computers, this is a nice feature.
Hope that's helpful. To me, an extra $10 is worth having an extra USB port free on my laptop and other computer! And I much prefer the keyboard shortcut vs the remote button!

IOGear GCS22U 2-Port USB KVM Switch, 2-Port USB Cable KVM allows users to share a VGA monitor, a USB mouse, and a USB keyboard between two computers. It offers an out-of-box solution with no additional cables needed. It supports multiple operating systems including Windows, Sun, and Mac. It is entirely plug-n-play and requires no software to run. It is also powered through the USB bus and thus does not require a power supply to run. HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus Wireless e-All-in-One (CM756A#B1H) Review

HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus Wireless e-All-in-One (CM756A#B1H)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I have a small home office and use this printer primarily for business type tasks. I replaced a Samsung All-in-One Laser printer with this HP All-in-One. I will also be writing reviews for other devices that I use for business travel and backcountry backpacking including: HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus AirPrint enabled printer, Solio Rocsta H1000 Solar Charger and Verizon MiFi 2200, five device 3G mobile broadband HotSpot. Click on the "See all my Reviews" link above.=== Background Information ===
The primary features that were critical to my decision were AirPrint, duplex printing, and double sided copying. None of these features were available on the Samsung. HP is the only company that offers AirPrint. This allows printing directly from iOS4.2 enabled iPad, iPod Touch 4th Gen, and iPhone 4. ePrinting is not the same and I will discuss the advantages of both. HP also offers a free app for the iPod devices called iPrint. I will explore some of those cool features.
This review will also compare a few feature differences between the 8500A and the 8500A plus. I was very close to buying the 8500A, but opted for the improved features of the 8500A Plus. I hope this comparison will allow you to make a better choice too.=== AirPrint compared to ePrint ===
Another feature unique to the Apple iPod Touch 4th Gen device, iPad, and iPhone 4 is AirPrint. It should be noted that the iPod Touch 3rd gen with iOS4.2 cannot AirPrint. One more reason that swayed my decision to buy the 4th Gen device. AirPrint is different from ePrinting. AirPrint allows you to print almost anything like, documents, PDFs, photos, Internet pages and Internet PDFs to an HP AirPrint enabled printer. You cannot ePrint Internet pages or Internet PDF files. AirPrinting occurs instantly. ePrinting has a slight delay before the job prints.
You can get around this feature by opening Internet PDF files like an owner's manual to an HP printer, in HP iPrint. This is a free app available for iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone. Then inside iPrint, you can email the PDF to your printer from anywhere in the world using WiFi. I enjoy recipe hunting on the Internet and this is a true advantage of AirPrint over ePrint. When you find the recipe, just print it straight from the Internet. You cannot do this with ePrint or HP iPrint. Another unique feature of AirPrint is double sided printing, to save on paper. ePrint does not allow double sided printing.
Photos look amazing when printing directly from the iPod Touch. Even photos taken from the iPod Touch look good. AirPrint does have a limitation. This is a feature that allows you to print while on the same WiFi network. So, if I travel to another part of the state, I cannot AirPrint to the home office. However, if the hotel has an AirPrint enabled printer then you can print to it. ePrinting is different.
Many HP printers and other brands offer ePrinting. This is a very cool feature that allows you to print from your iPod Touch 4th Gen to an ePrinter through email. Your ePrinter must be connected to a WiFi network and it is assign a specific email address. Then, while travelling on the road away from the home network, I can email a document or photo to the ePrinter's email address and viola, done. The limitation with ePrint is that not all applications will allow you to send an email from within the application. You cannot ePrint Internet pages or Internet PDFs. Only HP printers (and only a handful of models) are equipped for AirPrint. Check out this page for AirPrint enabled printers: [...]
Only the Photosmart series comes with AirPrint in the firmware. The Officejet A series printers require a firmware upgrade. I did this in the initial installation process and it was very easy to perform. You cannot download the firmware from the HP website. I wasted 30 minutes trying to find it. You upgrade the firmware by accessing the user panel on the printer. Go to Setup Menu / Web Services / Product Update. === HP iPrint app for iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone ===
Another cool application is iPrint by HP. It is a free app for iPod devices and probably other android devices too, but not sure with those. iPrint will allow you to print photos, saved files like PDFs and direct printing from your iPod Touch or iPhone camera. I can really get all this with the AirPrint feature, so no big deal here.
iPrint differs in that you can directly scan documents and work files directly to a saved folder in your iPod device. You can then open, view, share, and print those scanned pages. They will automatically be saved as PDFs. Another feature is that you can wirelessly transfer files from your home network computer to your iPod device. Then you can open, share, and print those. For example, I can upload some recipes from home and share them with co-workers at the office. Do note that you won't be able to open word documents with file extension .doc or .docx. So, be sure to convert those files to PDFs before importing.
iPrint also seems like it would be very useful for android devices too, since it allows for options to be selected unlike ePrinting. In HP iPrint you can print grayscale or color, select your paper size, and choose double sided printing.=== HP 8500A vs. 8500A Plus ===
The most obvious difference between the two models is a larger LCD screen and a slightly larger ADF tray. The 8500A Plus holds 50 sheets compared to 35 on the 8500A. When looking at the specs, it is hard to see the differences. When I played with two machines at a local store there are several key features beyond the screen size.
The 8500A Plus has a full scale copy feature similar to what you would have with a $5000 copier at an office. It will perform the following key tasks:
1 sided to 2 sided
2 sided to 1 sided
2 sided to 2 sided
Printing can be done to short edge or long edge.
The 8500A would not copy 2 sided to 2 sided, which is the most common type of scanning and printing tasks that I perform. For this reason alone, I opted for the 8500A Plus. I did see a few other tasks that the 8500A Plus would perform over the 8500A, but I do not recall the details. === Summary ===
HP 8500A Plus is a step up from the 8500A, offering key features with printing and copying that will save you time and money, like 2 sided to 2 sided copies. Both of these printers will allow for ePrint, HP iPrint, and the highly beloved Apple AirPrint. Only the AirPrint feature will allow you to print directly from the Internet to an HP AirPrint enabled printer. All these features come with a reliable, high quality printer with high capacity ink cartridges for cost savings.

Portable Handheld ECG EKG Heart Monitor Complete Kit 4 ways to use - New Version with Premium ECG Cable Fits Both Standard Disposable ECG Electrodes and Reusable ECG Electrodes

LIKES: Although it feels very light weight (almost too light)in your hands it has a capability I didn't see in the other EKG monitors priced under $200. In addition to just pressing the monitor to your chest wall to run an EKG,...this one also comes with a 3 Lead "hard-wire" option to measure EKGs. This option gives much better EKG results and if you have enough medical knowledge to move/repostion the 3 Leads you can actually monitor yourself in any of the 12 Leads! Although they are very clear that this is 'not' a diagnostic quality EKG read out, I could easily differentiate Normal Sinus Rhythm from Rapid Atrial Fibrillation on myself. I believe the read out is clear/crisp enough with the hard wire option that I could determine if someone were having an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (heart attack). The device itself has very limited EKG interpretation software built in.
DISLIKES: I loaded the PC software that comes with it on both my Windows XP and VISTA computers and the software looks pretty impressive for cataloging EKGs for as many different people as you want including height weight Medications allergies and notes for each person and EKG down loaded but I can't get the EKG machine to download EKGs to either of my home computers.
It only comes with 3 electrode stickers (the stickers that go on your chest wall), so end users will have to buy more electrode stickers from another resource if you want to use the 3 Lead 'hard-wire' option.

Sharp EL-1192BL Desktop 2 Color Printing Calculator Review

Sharp EL-1192BL Desktop 2 Color Printing Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I run a home business and keeping books is a critical part of my daily work. I needed a calculator that had large numbers, larger keys and printed off tape.
Scrounging around Amazon.com I came across several models that would have done the job well. I have had Sharp calculators in my office at work, and know this to be a reliable brand.
I came across this particular model, and having done some on line research, Amazon had the cheapest price of anyone on this model.
I have to say that I have not been disappointed in this purchase. It is a very reliable calculator, the paper tape with 2 color printout is very readable, and the numbers are large, well lit and the keys fit my big fat fingers. It has some great features like percentage and sales tax that you can place the sales tax % in memory. There are other tax functions as well.
This calculator does not take batteries, and that's fine cause it's a waste of money to put batteries in one of these.
This is a good calculator and one that I do recommend for the home office.

I love this product! It is a great way to display pictures, and functional at the same time. The only thing I don't like about it is that the space for displaying tie pictures is rather small - however I was able to fit the pictures of my family that I wanted to display in the space provided with no problems!

Brother PT-65 P-touch Home and Hobby Labeler with LCD Screen Review

Brother PT-65 P-touch Home and Hobby Labeler with LCD Screen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We owned another labeler made by Dymo and were not very happy with it. The keys were laid out alphabetically rather than QWERTY style and typing felt unnatural. We also could not find any store that carried blank label cartridges - even the store we bought it from (Best Buy) didn't. We had to order them directly from the manufacturer and probably paid more than we needed to.
Although the old labeler still works, we decided to purchase this one. It is a much better product. The keypad is easy to use and the unit has some great features built into it. I like the fact that you can change fonts, or frames and can print on a variety of colors. The labels seem to stick much better than the Dymo brand labels we used before. They adhere to surfaces that I couldn't get cellophane tape to stick to. Almost every office supply or electronic store seems to sell the label cartridges in several colors and sizes.
I only have two negative comments about this unit. First, sometimes it is hard to peel the back off of the label. You have to try to get your fingernail or similar object between the backing and the label and this is often difficult to do. Second, it needs SIX AA batteries to run. If you print a lot of labels you're going to be buying a lot of batteries. I wish that they could have designed it to run off of an AC power source also.
Despite these negatives, I think that this is great product. It works well, is compact, and is reasonably priced.

Royal Machines XE12 Calculator with 12 Digit Display and Compact Design with One Touch Flip Screen Review

Good little calculator. When closed, its measurements are 3 1/4 by 9/16 by 2 3/16 inches. The flip screen is opened by sliding the latch to the right. Even if you slide the latch, the screen cannot be flipped open easily with one hand, so I am not quite sure what they meant by "One Touch Flip Screen" in the Title Description of this product. However, this does not bother me. I love the fact that it has a delete button (which deletes the last entered digit for each time you press it, in case you mistyped). The buttons are not too small, so you can comfortably use one finger (and not a fingernail) to type. I just wished that they could have made this calculator thinner.

Emachines D620-5777 Notebook Computer Review

Emachines D620-5777 Notebook Computer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to say that I like this little laptop. I got mine for $369 at Office Depot. At a "netbook" price I have a real laptop. That means I have a 14" screen (not 7-10"), a full size keyboard (not a tiny one) and a CD/DVD burner (not available on netbooks). In addition, it came with Vista Basic which is less of a resource hog than Vista Premium and a number of useful programs like Microsoft Works, NTI burning and backup software and Google Desktop. My computer came with 2 GB RAM.
I find the performance to be more than adequate for routine tasks and much speedier than netbooks that I have used. With a real sized keyboard I feel that this computer could handle real tasks like typing a 10-20 page paper. There is more than enough power to do those things that the typical user would want, like some simple photo editing.
Obviously this is a bargain laptop so you can't expect the same features that you would get in a $1000 computer. You won't find a webcam or even a SD card reader but you can certainly add those via USB if needed. Speaking of USB, you only get 2 ports as opposed to the usual 3 and don't expect anything fancy like an HDMI or external SATA port.
Will this computer:
Run MS Office? Yes
Run a simple photo editor? Yes
Run Adobe Photoshop? Probably not too well
Run Print Shop? Yes
Run Adobe Illustrator? Probably not too well
Edit a short You Tube video using MS Moviemaker? Yes
Edit a long HD movie using Adobe Premier? Probably not
Play simple 2D games? Yes
Play complex, high action 3D games? Probably not
Use a web cam for Skype? Yes, but you will need to supply your own USB camera
Read flash cards? Yes, but you will have to buy a cheap USB card reader
All in all I think the folks at eMachine thought long and hard to create a useable machine at the lowest price point. In my opinion they succeeded. If you want a super powered gamer in a fashion color look elsewhere. If you need a basic machine that is bigger but also more user friendly than a netbook check out the eMachine.

I have been desperately trying to get organized, and when I found this gizmo from heaven at a heavenly price, naturally I jumped on it. After a few weeks of labeling frenzy, much like one of my other fellow reviewers, the tops of my labels started fading, then the middles, and soon the entire text of all my labels, poof! disapparated! Yes! I am a Harry Potter fan, but not for my labels in invisible ink. Tried all of the suggestions from the website. Cleaning, changing batteries, labels, cartridges. No luck. Still shooting blanks. Of course no way to put in new ink cartridges and it seems like the ink ran out. So waiting to hear back from customer service. Will post back, when and if I do. Really sad-that my labeling frenzy has been thwarted!!

When I was given a Kindle for my birthday (holy cow, best gift ever), I kept it in its plastic wrapping until I could get a screen protector for it. Call me nutty, but I've had to deal with the uphill battle of trying to get every last microscopic speck of stuff off of screens (and failing), so I didn't want to risk it.
What surprised me was the fact that Amazon didn't seem to carry a non-reflective/antiglare screen protector that was also firmer rather than a "film." I've had less than stellar experiences with thin protectors (namely, those suckers ALWAYS peel off around the edges) so I was set on getting a firmer protector. Amazon only seemed to carry the film type ones, and the reviews were (as expected) cruddy. But then, lo and behold, I saw this one from a company in Germany--more expensive, but also firmer, with an antiglare finish. No reviews, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway.
Superb! It arrived faster than quoted (I was quoted nearly a month, and it came in about a week) and was relatively easy to apply and position. I got all but a few tiny flecks off, even being OCD about it, and unlike some protectors this doesn't have a permeable gas membrane to make those "disappear." Still, that's not the product's fault.
Only reason I'm giving it four stars is the fit is just fractionally too small; that might be on purpose, to enable removal later. We're talking a space maybe the thickness of two standard paper pages on two edges, so very unnoticeable. We'll see how easily it comes off when it's time to replace it, but I think with the thickness of the protector (really nice) and the non-glare finish, I'm going to get a lot of life out of this. :)

Lexmark Pinnacle Pro901 All-in-One Printer Review

Lexmark Pinnacle Pro901 All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Lexmark Pinnacle Pro901 has gotten quite a bit of press given that it can use black ink cartridges that cost $5. Clearly, that distinction is unique among inkjet printers, most of which are sold at or near a loss so that the manufacturer can recoup expenses on the sale of (extremely) high-margin replacement cartridges. So, does that feature make this printer worth the purchase? Perhaps...but perhaps not. > Why?
Sure, the black cartridge retails for $5, but the three color cartridges will set you back more than $50. Thus, your savings (and cost per copy) will very much depend on your usage. If you are careful to print and copy in black and white, then this printer will likely prove to be quite inexpensive for you - approximately 1 cent per page given that the black cartridge is rated for 500 average pages of text. On the other hand, if you print a mix of materials, your cost per page could actually be more than competing inkjets. HP has a white paper on their website that claims that their cost per page is actually *lower* than Lexmark's for *color* content. Amazon is not a fan of links in reviews, but fire up Google and search for "HP Officejet / Officejet Pro vs. Lexmark Cost-Per-Page Comparison" if you are interested.
Oh well, no argument, $5 is a good deal for black and white output. So good, in fact, that the cashier at Office Depot did a double take when he rang up three of them for me, asking, "is this really the correct price?" Thus, if you limit your color printing/copying, the Pro901 (and related models, e.g., 905) really *can* represent quite a savings in comparison with competing models. If instead, you print significant amounts of color content, I would call it a wash. > So, how is it as a printer?
In a word, decent. Text is dark and clear, unlike many competing models. Photographs also seem fairly decent...especially on photo paper. My in-store tests showed that it fared very well in comparison to the lauded Epson Artisan 810 on plain paper. That said, most reviewers claim that the Artisan is superior on photo paper, which one would expect given that the Artisan uses a 6-color cartridge system. Regardless, photographs looked good enough to my eye...and the Pro901's text quality is far better than the Artisan's in my opinion. Obsessable[dot]com has a detailed review that focuses on print quality if that issue is your primary concern.
The printer also has a removable tray that holds either 150 sheets of paper (up to legal size) or photo paper...but not both simultaneously (as does the Epson Artisan line). You can add a second tray to the Pro901, thereby upgrading your 901 to a 905, but that option is fairly pricey (at the moment).
The output tray is really just an extendable plastic arm, but it is fairly rigid...and seems about ten times more rugged than the flip-out equivalent on the Artisan 810.> How about scanning and copying?
Scanning quality looks good. To scan, you can place the document directly on the glass or use the document feeder. Many have reported problems using the feeder, but it worked quite well for me. That said, the controls are where this unit really shines for scanning and copying...but more on that topic later.

> What about faxing?
Well, the fax uses the aforementioned printer and scanner for the fax operation, so the physical aspects of faxing are also decent, as one would infer from the discussion of those features. Once again, where faxing really shines, however, relates to the controls...which brings us to... > How are the controls?
Well, the controls on the device can be summed up in one word -- fantastic.
The device has a 4.3" full color touch screen that is really striking. Of course, a decent screen without a decent UI is a waste...and Lexmark did not waste the screen. The UI consists of beautifully rendered 3D controls that are laid out intuitively. The user interface strives to keep each screen simple and clear in purpose, yet also provides easy access to more advance features that are relevant to the current operation at a touch. In general, they allow quick access to all device features and do so in a manner that does not require a Computer Science degree to access all of the useful settings. The beauty and intuitiveness of the display and the controls must be seen and used to be appreciated fully, but perhaps it suffices to say that even the most non-technical user in my house is able to perform advanced operations with this device. I wasn't particularly looking for a touch screen, but there is no turning back after using this one.
With regards to specifics, the controls allow you to perform simple copying and faxing functions as you would expect, but also allow you to initiate document scans that are sent directly to any computer on your network (provided it has the driver software installed) or to a recipient via email. Specifying recipients for either the fax or email can be either by direct entry or by using the device's embedded address book. Of course, specifying other options during these operations (quality, size, color/b&w, ...) is also extremely straightforward.
The device also includes one other unique control feature - downloadable applications. While some of these downloadable applications are fairly limited in value (e.g., a calculator, RSS news feed display), others may be incredibly useful to users who have repeating scanning, copying, or faxing tasks.
Lexmark coined the term SmartSolutions for the downloadable applications. Several come preinstalled while others can be downloaded from the Lexmark website. The website uses a browser-based Java applet to review, configure, and install each application directly to your Pro901 from their website, eliminating the need for you to perform an additional installation after downloading.
So what do they do? Well, what do you want them to do? You can configure a SmartSolution for almost any type of repeating task - scanning, copying, faxing. Yes, this explanation is somewhat obtuse, so perhaps an example will help.
Assume that you must scan a timesheet each week and mail it to one individual (Fred) as a PDF...with a specific subject and message. You can certainly use the device's standard "scan" control to perform this task, but you would need to tap quite a few buttons to make it happen - first scan, then specify scan to email, then specify options (like document type, color/b&w, email address, etc.). Alternatively, for such a repeating task, you can pre-configure a SmartSolution task to perform all of these steps in one button push...and name it "Email timesheet to Fred". In the future, you could then drop your timesheet on the document feeder, click the Smart Solutions button, and then click the "Email timesheet to Fred" button.
You can do the same for scanning documents to your computer. Assume that you scan a credit card statement each month, place it in a PDF, name the PDF with the card/bank name and the date, and place the PDF in a specific credit card statement folder on one of the computers on your network. You guessed it - one button click....assuming that you configured a Smart Solution for this task.
There are many other Smart Solutions, including one to upload scanned files directly to Evernote and another to print your calendar directly from Google...and Lexmark has been creating new applications fairly regularly during the two months that I have owned the device. Thus, a description of them all is not practical, but suffice to say that there is probably at least one that you will find useful. Of course, you can also ignore them and life would be fine...and you would still have access to the full range of features on this device...albeit with a couple more button pushes.
The controls also extend to computers configured with the Lexmark driver software. Normally, I am not a fan of heavyweight printer software on my computers, but the installed Lexmark software does allow access to useful features on the device....which brings us to...> How easy is it to install and configure?
Not bad. The Pro901 supports direct connection to a PC (or Mac) via a USB cable or by using a network-based connection via wireless or Ethernet cable. I installed mine as a network-based printer by connecting it to my home's Gigabit Ethernet backbone (no slow wireless for me :), so plug-and-play detection was not an option. Instead, I installed the driver software on several PCs in my home using the included CD. The first installation included PC-based setup of the device as well, while the installer allowed me to bypass such configuration for subsequent PCs. All-in-all, quite painless...but also not plug-and-play. Of course, that's what you get with a network-based configuration.> So why not 5 stars?
Because the fax's caller ID is maddening. Seriously.
Even if you configure the fax to not auto-answer, the device's control screen will still display caller ID for each incoming call. Hey, that doesn't sound bad, does it? It is...because each time that the device needs to display this caller ID, it must wake from its sleep state, which also cycles the print head back and forth. Sure, not a problem if the device is awake, but it is an energy star device so it must sleep eventually. You can configure the time before the device sleeps, but regardless, sooner or later you will be sitting next to it when the phone rings and the device is asleep...and you will then need to answer the phone with the device noisily warming up in the background. Amusingly enough, the...Read more›

Vtech I5871 - Expandable System w/ digital Answering Device, Color Handset Display & Dual Caller ID Review

Vtech I5871 - Expandable System w/ digital Answering Device, Color Handset Display and Dual Caller ID
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll jump right in and say what I didn't like about this phone. The handset speakerphone is extremely bad, constantly cutting in and out made the phone unusable in this mode. I called Vtech customer service and they told me to unplug the phone for a couple of minutes and then plug it back in and try it, but that didn't help either. Figuring I got a bad one I went back up to Office Depot to get another and guess what, this one did the exact same thing. Vtech has a problem with these phones.
Aside from the speakerphone in the handset problem the phone worked great. The software which installs on your PC and allows you do download ringtones and photos worked very good. The screen on the phone was very sharp.
By the way the speakerphone on the base worked very very good, to bad they couldn't have done a better job on the handset's speakerphone.
If it wasn't for the terrible speakerphone on the handset I would have given this phone 5 stars and would still own it.
Update:6-11-05
After using the Vtech phone I tried the color models that Uniden and Panasonic had to offer. The Panasonic had a very good screen but lacked the volume I needed. The Uniden's flip phone was nice but the screen was way below the quality of the Vtech and Panasonic and Unidens software was not good at all. Sending info to and from the phone was very slow.
After taking the Panasonic back I decided to try the Vtech again but this time I went to another Office Depot. This new phone has worked flawlessly and didn't exibit the same handset speakerphone problems as the first two.
It's my opinion now that of the three color screen phones the Vtech is much better than Panasonic and Uniden. I'd now give it a full 5 stars.
Highly Recommended!

3M Desk Mount Easy-Adjust Monitor Arm (MA200MB) Review

3M Desk Mount Easy-Adjust Monitor Arm (MA200MB)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this arm! I've had it just a few days. But I can't imagine living without it now! This thing is STURDY! To my mind the design is beautiful. And it does exactly exactly what you need, which is to have a monitor which can be raised or lowered, brought closer or pushed into the background, and turned every which way (including sideways!). I bought it to go with my new Mac Mini, Apple Mac Mini MC270LL/A Desktop, and a lovely monitor, ViewSonic's VX2250WM-LED 22-Inch (21.5-Inch Vis) Widescreen Full HD 1080p LED Monitor with Integrated Stereo Speakers, which would have been very stationary, not flexible.
It is so easy to assemble this arm, which comes beautifully packaged in a small box (in three large pieces, with everything you need to assemble it in several different ways - including tools, with the exception of a Phillips screwdriver). I'm a 65 year old female and had no trouble following the pictures to assemble it. I will admit though, that its weight is so heavy once it's assembled, that I did get some help holding it, while I attached it to my table. (That's not a negative, but you might want another person around when you're attaching it to the table.) By the way, it provides a variety of ways to attach as well. All pictured in the directions that come with it. This is one flexible and brilliant piece of equipment!
If you're looking for something which may last longer than you will, which is easy to assemble, very sturdy, and enables you to have almost infinite control over how you place your monitor, this is what you've been looking for! It's a small price to pay when you consider how long it will last. It was delivered quickly by Amazon.
If you can't afford it now, put it on your wish list for later!

HP Photosmart Premium TouchSmart Web All-in-One Printer Review

HP Photosmart Premium TouchSmart Web All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted to like this, but I just do not think that the Web feature really justifies doubling the price of the prior Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One Printer, Scanner, Copier and Fax. (Model C309a)HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One Inkjet Printer (CC335A#ABA). Since the C309a is the model I am replacing this review is really a comparison of this new model over the old one. The old one is still readily available for about half the price of this - which is a really big difference. Also, the C309a - at half the price - has one feature missing here - an automatic document feeder. Why is that important? It is important if you want to be able to easily scan multi-page PDF documents. I can put a stack of papers on the C309a and they automatically run through the feeder (never once had a jam) and a multi-page PDF appears on my desktop. This new model is missing that. The lack of the document feeder also renders the fax absolutely useless. To send a fax you have to stand there and "scan" each page of the fax on the glass. It is hardly honest to call this a fax machine.
The specs between the two printers are exactly the same, except the C309a has the automatic document feeder and this one has the web interface. Also, the old model holds 125 pages of regular paper, but this one is down to 100 - a move totally in the wrong direction. Why can't they just design a printer tray (for a non-commercial printer) that holds a ream of paper (500 pages)? Also, this one is missing the special holder for printing CDs, but I never used that anyway.
The new model is smaller (good) and black (instead of a creamy white). The new model also has better drivers - which were (and still are) a MAJOR drawback of the old model. You can finally install a basic set of drivers that don't cripple functions, and don't add a bunch of junk software. This is a MAJOR improvement.
Print quality on both is absolutely amazing. Prints look just like they came from the photomat. Yes. They are that good. (although, unless you use the little flimsy retainer arm, they will drop on the floor once complete.)
I have mine hooked up through wi-fi and that works great. It is easily seen on all computers on my network that run Win7 and XP.
One negative (on this and the old version) is that you still need a computer to be on to do scanning - even to a network drive. The scanning software runs on a computer, not locally on the printer. Copying, faxing and printing can be done without a computer.
OK. What about the web interface? Well, my personal take is that it is a huge gimmic intended to get you to print more and use more ink. Things take forever to find on the touch interface and it would really be about a thousand times faster just to use a computer. Of course, if you - for whatever reason - only have your computer in a far-off room, this might proove handy if the printer is in a more high-traffic area of the house. But is that really a problem? And would you really put your printer far away from your computer? Not likely. I found the touchscreen slow to respond and - although beautiful to look at - I just didn't get the need for the web interface. The only conclusion I can make is that HP wants you to print more stuff and use more ink.
The ink, by the way, goes VERY quickly. I printed a dozen or so 4x6 photos and a couple of 8x10 and the ink light warning started to go off. Of course, I really think the light goes off WAY too early. It does that on almost every printer I have ever used. I continue printing until I notice a problem with the output. I am guessing that the low ink warning is set to go off when you have used 40% of the ink. I was able to print another dozen photos (after the ink warning) before I noticed any ink deficiency. I could probably print another dozen before it wouldn't let me print anymore.
Overall, I really like the printer quality and the interface, but I can't get past the elephant in the room - the old model is half the price and has an automatic document feeder that this is missing.
The printer comes with a standard set of ink cartridges (not just starter inks), every cable you could need (including a massive power brick), and sample photo papers. It is all packaged in an eco-friendly cloth bag.
Overall, I can only give this three stars. If the old model never existed, I would probably give this four or five stars. The fact that they left off the automatic document feeder is a HUGE drawback for me. The "Touchsmart Web" is fun to play with, but really amounts to nothing more than a flashy gimmic. It fixes a problem that doesn't really exist - everything you would do through that interface is easier and faster on a real computer. Of course, I am also a person who would never just plug a memory stick into a printer and start printing - if you are, this might be a good printer for you.

This one has everything. Super large LIGHTED caller ID, volume control for handset, power adapter for the caller id, many many extras. Im usually sucked in by the 10.00 phones and they always end up in the garbage. I thought I would try this one. I almost didnt because of the 29.00 price but it is well worth it. This is not a cheap phone. Its even angled perfect for the desk. The speakerphone sounds great as well. I love it and will probably buy another for the other desk in the house.
