Well, I got this phone today after returning a Uniden which sounded too muffled for my liking. I found the buttons solid and easy to read, and the setup seemed fairly intuitive to me. I actually had most of the basic features setup through my own playing around before I even cracked open the manual.
Now, I should mention that my phone needs are simple: I don't have call waiting, caller ID, or a special voicemail service so I can't speak to the merits of those features, but for someone who simply uses the phone for basic calls and basic answering machine features, I already like how it sounds and programs out of the box.
Pro's so far for my simple tastes:
- Buttons easy to press and see
- Can do most of the same setup on the satellite phones as you can on the base which is nice if you're sitting down and need to make some feature changes without the base in front of you.
- Directory info logged into one place transfers to the other phones in the system.
- Satellite phones aren't super heavy, but they don't feel chintzy either.
- It's nice having the corded handset on the base in addition to the satellite phones because if you're like me and forget where you put your satellite phones, you always know you can still rush to the base to retrieve an incoming call.
- You can set the phone to answer after 6 rings. My old systems answered after 4 rings, and I always felt this was not enough time.
Con's so far:
- There is no obvious "messages waiting" light indicator! When I get home from work, I'm used to looking all the way across the room to see if I have a flashing light, but now you have to go RIGHT UP to the base to look at the readout and see the blinking "messages waiting" indicator. It's actually not even a light; it is just a number blinking within the rest of the screen readout and no attention is drawn to it at all. I always liked knowing at a quick glance from far away if I had messages waiting so this was a real bummer for me. To compensate, you CAN set the machine to beep every ten seconds to indicate messages are waiting, so I guess I'll employ that feature so my ears can help me detect new messages when my eyes always can't from across the room, but beeping can get old really fast, so I'm not sure if that's the best solution. AT&T, please get an obvious flashing "messages waiting" light in this model. That seems like such a basic feature to omit, I don't get it.
- No belt clips for the satellite phones. Some might not care, but I love having the belt clip.
I'll see how things go after I've used it for awhile and maybe I'll post again. So far, not bad, and I like the clarity.
***UPDATE: December 26, 2010 Well, it's been over a year and my statements above still hold quite true for both the pro's and the con's. The phone is still holding up well, and I used the "page phone handset" a number of times to help me locate where I put the handset but forgot about it! The speakerphone feature can be a tad odd at times because when you set the handset on its flat bottom (like if you wanted to type on your PC and talk to someone simultaneously), the speaker is on the back side of the phone while the mouthpiece is on the front. So, it's a tad odd to hear someone's voice coming from the other side of the phone and I'll compromise by positioning the phone so the speaker faces to my left and the mouthpiece faces to my right. Not a major problem by any means.
Still feel good about this product.
