SanDisk Sansa m240 1 GB MP3 Player (Silver) Review

SanDisk Sansa m240 1 GB MP3 Player (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I hated my iPOD Mini so I tried a small flash player that was OK but hard to read & use. Then I found the Sansa M240 (1GB) for only $87 (Circuit City) and I'm thrilled with it.
Sound quality is very good with the supplied earbuds and using the Custom EQ. Without the Custom EQ I might not be so happy. A neckstrap with the earbuds would be nice but can be added. There's a hole to add a lanyard.
These 55 year old eyes found the Display easy to read even in the dark with a large, bold font and good contrast. The backlight is good but I'd prefer a lighter shade of blue for even better contrast. Very minor issue and really a matter of preference.
The controls are outstanding and one of the best features! The LARGE buttons are very easy to use and provide good tactile response.
Build quality is typical of similar products and seems well made with good fit and finish. Lightweight and handy size. Overall design is excellent in that they've put a large display and large buttons into a unit only slightly larger than a thumb drive!
I haven't gone through a battery yet but I do like the fact that it runs on a single AAA battery and doesn't need to be recharged with a cable or charger. I always keep a few AAA's in my briefcase anyway for "in-flight" replacements.
Connection to a PC is simple with the supplied standard mini-USB cable (same as for my phone and camera!). I like that there are no proprietary cables or connectors. I prepared my playlist with WMP and synched the M240. The M240 automatically sorts by artist, album and genre.
Although I haven't used it yet, the subscription compatibility is something I will probably use.
The FM Tuner receives even weaker stations and has 20 presets. With that many I can use different groups of presets for favorites in multiple cities. It would be nice to be able to record from FM as some units do but it's not a big deal.
There is a voice recorder funtion that might be handy but I don't really need it.
If you like simple & easy and eschew tiny, hard to use buttons and miniscule displays, you will like this a LOT - and it SOUNDS good.
Bottom Line: YES, I would buy it again!

Panasonic GigaRange KX-TG5576M 5.8 GHz DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Answering System and Color LCD on Handset (Metallic Grey) Review

Panasonic GigaRange KX-TG5576M 5.8 GHz DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Answering System and Color LCD on Handset (Metallic Grey)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the KX-TG5576M and an additional KX-TGA552CM handset six weeks ago and have it used almost daily since.
I have had to replace the set once because the handset battery was faulty (would run out of charge after about one hour of use). The replacement unit is a little better, but could still use more battery life.
Pros:
- Excellent speakerphone on the handset - callers say they cannot tell I'm on a speakerphone.
- The handset connects instantly after pressing TALK.
- Large Caller ID Memory (last 50 incoming calls listed)
- Has a BACK key so that you can back out of a menu hierarchy.
Cons:
- The handset display goes dark after a few seconds of using the handset. I suppose this is intended to be a battery saving measure, but it is very annoying when I want to check the number I just dialed, know how long I have been on a call, or use any other menu item like FLASH.
- The battery life on the handset is surprisingly short, especially when the handset speakerphone is used - it seems to need recharging after about two hours of cumulative use. My old Sony SPP-X90 lasted for weeks of speakerphone use before needing a recharge.
- I find the handset too small and slippery, and the speakerphone button is too small.
- No handset speed dial function, so you need to scroll through the phonebook for every number. The ability to program the number 1 through 9 buttons with press-for-one-second speed dial (like many cell phones have) would be a positive addition.
- If an incoming call is answered on one handset the other handsets display "Missed Call". They should have a way of knowing that a call was answered if not on that handset.
- I find the handset range to be less than 100 ft. in my concrete building
- The Voice Enhancer feature seems to do little except shift the caller's voice lower in tone, which can be more difficult to hear.
- Only PC/Wintel-compatible (not Mac) for the USB utility to change the wallpaper, ring tones, etc.
- It would be nice if the handset tracked all incoming / outgoing call histories (phone number, call date, time, duration) like most cell phones do.
- Only a 50-entry phonebook capacity - 100 or more entries would have been more practical.
Overall this unit does the job. They could have put in a larger capacity battery - even if this meant making the handset a little larger, which is too small to be easily held against my shoulder anyway.

Average Reviews:

I purchased four of these phone to replace the 2.4 ghz phones I had. The 2.4 ghz interfered with my wireless laptop that had a 2.4 ghz wireless modem. Hey, Who knew it would be a problem! These phones are nice. They are a little too light and narrow for my liking. All of the remote charging bases are too light and tip over when you try to dock the phones. I finally put two sided tape on the bottom of the bases to hold them in place. The notification light on the front of the phone blinks continuously whether there is a voicemail or not. I have tried to reset the phones and that works until you have another voicemail and then you have to reset all the phones again. This is frustrating. I do like the intercom feature and you can pass a call from one handset to another.

Uniden TRU9496 2-Line Corded/Cordless Digital Answering System Review

Uniden TRU9496 2-Line Corded/Cordless Digital Answering System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for a system to replace an aging Siemens 8825.
After trying the Panasonic KX-TG6700B (defective), the
Motorola MD7081 and MD7091 (both have terrible sound quality),
and the AT&T EP5962 (poor button layout and feel and display) I decided to
try a Uniden product. So far, the TRU9496 is getting the job done.
What's good:

1.Good size, feel and layout.
2.Easy to set up.
3.Speaker volume on the base and handset speakerphones
Is excellent.
4.Sound quality on the base and handset is excellent.
5.Phonebook can be searched by first letter of the name.
6.Phonebook allows two phone numbers per name.
7.A handset can communicate with another handset directly,
Like a walkie-talkie.
8.Base display shows how many messages are in the answering
Machine separately for each line.
9.Base and handset displays show date and time.
10.A waterproof handset is available (TWX977).
11. Keypad on the handset is backlit.
What's not so good:
1.Range is ok but could be a little better.
2.Ringer volume control is not great. There are only two settings:
Low is to low, and high is too high.
This phone system should be seriously considered for its sound clarity
And excellent set of features.

Franklin Spelling Ace with Thesaurus Review

Franklin Spelling Ace with Thesaurus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased four of these spellers for my fifth grade classroom, I had two older models of the Franklin spelling ace and thought I would give this new version a whirl.
Good Points:
They are small and fit on the top of a student's desk without interfering with the writing space.
The batteries are behind a cover that screws shut - read: no flying batteries during our writing sessions.
The thesaurus is terrific.
Bad Points:
The cover is hard to open and is another step in getting to the tool.
The Spelling Ace is not intuitive - you must read the directions closely in order to have the speller work properly. Reading directions, remembering directions and following directions are not skills that most adults have mastered let alone fifth graders.
This last bad point is my fault and one that I had not thought about before purchasing...I wish that I had purchased one with audio - my students who use these need that sound/letter correlation in order to remember how to spell the word they are looking up (and recognize the word when they see it).

Uniden CLX-485 5.8 GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone with Color LCD, Answering System, Caller ID, and Dual Keypads
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this phone and 4 handsets 3 weeks ago and have used 2/3 of the features at this point. I had finally grown tired of the horrible battery life on my Panasonic 2.4GHZ KX-TG2730S and had to make the switch.
The Good:
1) Slick phone which is fairly comfortable to hold.
2) Easy to move info between the handsets and a great ability to label your handsets for in-house paging (instead of Handset #1, you can label it Basement).
3) Great battery life so far. The panasonics were going dead within 30 minutes after 2-weeks of usage.
4) No effect on my Wi-Fi set-up.
The Bad:
1) The built-in ring tones are terrible. Lots of choices, unfortunately none are very good. The all sound like bad cell phone ringers.
2) The coverage is so-so. In most areas of my house it is fine, but in some areas that were fine with the 2.4GHZ, the Unidens are iffy. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good.
3) Remote functions. Dialing in to get your messages is brutal. You must dial a zero before each function code and it keeps re-setting my greeting so that I have to either re-record on the fly, or go with no message. Luckily we have Vonage so we usually forward our calls when we are travelling for an extended time, but if you have to dial in to get messages on a frequent basis, you will not be happy.
Mixed:
1) Despite the bad ring tones mentioned above, you can record custom ring tones. The only problem is that you have to actually go in an play a song while the phone physically records it. You can't move an MP3 over and then have it transferred to all handsets automatically. Overall it is a good feature, but not very user friendly.
Overall, it is an improvement over the Panasonic, but the ringtones and the remote dialing are some good size negatives if those are important to you. 4 out of 5 stars.
*******
Update
I ended up returning the unit. The quality throughout the house was spotty at best. I switched to the Panasonic KXTG5576M and that is working MUCH better. Much longer range and much better quality. What I initially thought was Vonage issues, turned out to be Uniden CLX485 issues. Too bad as I did like the feel of the handset and the battery life.

AT&T EP5995 - 5.8GHz Expandable Cordless Answering System with Dial-In-Base Speakerphone Review

After reviewing cordless phones and looking at them, We picked this one based on consumer report and buyer reviews in addition to features and looks of course. We also needed a multi handset system and this one can support up to 8 handsets. We also needed a system that would not interfere in our wireless computer network. We had a multi handset system which was 2 years old but did interfere and would often cause problems. This was super easy to install and set up. It is similar to using a cell phone and has many of the same features. We love the ability to display pictures and animations along with being able to name each handset which we named for each room they belong in. We have always had problems with knowing where our old handsets belonged and would have to find the empty base from which it had been taken. Another cool feature is that you can record your own music or sounds for your ringer if you want. We also love the intercom capability which our old system had but this is much better. We have had these for almost a month and have had no problems with them or any of the functions or features. We have not set up our directory yet so don't know how that part works yet. The handsets are a little larger than our old ones but still very nice looking and the small bases are very stable which is much better than our old ones. The base unit is excellent in that it is really easy to use all the features on it, it has buttons so you can use the base without the handset which is always nice to be able to answer your phone when someone forgot to replace the handset! It also has a battery storage place which takes the same battery as the system and will allow your base unit to work in case of a power outage. We didn't realize this when we purchased this but would have bought the extra battery at the same time had we known.

Western Digital My Book Studio 1 TB USB 2.0/FireWire 800/400, Desktop External Hard Drive Review

Western Digital My Book Studio 1 TB USB 2.0/FireWire 800/400, Desktop External Hard Drive

Having always liked Western Digital Quality, I purchased a few of these drives - and was horrified to learn that WD has chosen to pre-install a large suite of largely useless 'SmartWare' on the drive.
The problem is, it's not defeatable; it takes up disk space, but is activated in Flash - so no way to get rid of it. It robs you of a drive letter (in windows) or a drive on Mac OS X - again, without a way to get rid of it.
After weeks of complaining by users, WD issues a 'VCD' utility that allows you to 'hide' it (but not get rid of it); the zinger is that the current drives need updated firmware to run VCD - and WD has NOT published the firmware updater for Studio drives yet, hence making the former utility useless.
All in all a bad experience, a drive marred by mad design, and I for one will no longer purchase WD until they reverse this strategy of spyware on a drive that cannot be overridden. From the feedback everywhere, I assume they will get the message.UPDATED:
The new 'info' WD had Amazon add to the line (visit support to hide VCD) is NOT true; the support site ONLY has updates for the Elite and Essential, but NOT for the Studio line yet. That means, the updater won't work, as the firmware updater required has still not been released. Check it yourself on their site; very, very poor support and misleading post

Epson MovieMate 60 Portable Projector, DVD and music player combo (V11H319220) Review

Epson MovieMate 60 Portable Projector, DVD and music player combo (V11H319220)

Epson has created a winner here with an all-in-one projector with integrated DVD player and powered speakers. Just add a screen for an instant movie night at home or on the road... even in the backyard. The projector's 2,000 ANSI Lumen rating means that it can drive a very large screen - Epson says up to 14.5 feet diagonally, but at this size, pixel structure is visible and you need a very dark environment to prevent the image from getting washed out. But in the 80-100 inch range, the MovieMate 60 provides a bright colorful picture from DVDs, and looks even better if you plug in a high definition set-top box or Blu-ray player to its HDMI input (720p and 1080i HD sources are supported, converted automatically to the projector's native 540p resolution).
The sound isn't quite a match for the picture, with fairly weak bass, but dialog comes through cleanly and the built-in 20 watt amp and stereo speakers are strong enough to provide better sound than most TVs. The MM 60 offers a headphone output as well as a coax digital output in case you want to hook it up to a more powerful audio system. It also includes a microphone jack so you can rock out with some giant screen karaoke! The unit has a fixed lens with only 1.3x zoom which means it is not that flexible in placement. You will need to have it centered and pretty far back from the screen in order to create a large image. It does well on a coffee table about 8 to 12 feet away from the screen, depending on how large you want the image to be. For larger screen outdoor viewing, it will need to be even further back.
It's tons of fun to connect a Wii or other game console, for virtually life-sized game play. But remember to stand or sit behind the projector when playing so you won't cast a shadow on the screen. It's also an excellent choice for a senior center or local recreation center as you can be ready for a movie night or slide show in just a couple of minutes and you can pack everything away in a closet when not in use.
Although you can project the image onto a white or off-white wall, this will not give you the best results. We'd recommend using the Epson Duet Screen which isn't too expensive, and offers a 80-inch diagonal screen in 16:9 mode (or 65-inch screen in 4:3 mode). It folds away for storage and is pretty easy to set up. Its white matte screen and black frame help to enhance the contrast and brightness of the image giving you a more movie theater-like experience (but hopefully without the sticky floors!).
Overall, we give this 4 stars for its audio and video performance, but it's definitely super-fun and convenient. If you want a big screen experience virtually anywhere with a minimum of fuss and a budget-friendly price, it's hard to do better than the MovieMate 60. A full review is available on big picture big sound (dot com).

Western Digital My Passport Studio 500 GB FireWire 800/400 USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Silver) Review

Western Digital My Passport Studio 500 GB FireWire 800/400 USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Silver)

If you're a Mac user or, like me, use both Macs and PCs then you know that portable hard drives still come in two flavors - those that are Mac ready and those that are PC ready. If you want a PC ready drive with Firewire capability you're still out of luck but this Western Digital offering is much closer to plug and play that previous offerings.
I have two of these drives. The first I use at work with a Mac and the setup was as easy as advertised. Just plug it in and it works. The second I use at home with a PC and that's a little tricky. I wanted the FireWire option (if the coolest PCs only have so many USB ports) so I was willing to put up with some hassle for the functionality. Here's what you need to do on a Windows 7 PC:
Plug in the drive
Click on the start button
Go to Computer and right click
Select Manage (you'll need admin rights)
On the Computer Management screen select Disk Management (under Storage)
My Studio will be listed as not initialized. It won't have a drive letter.
Right click on the My Studio disk and select Initialize
Then Right click again and select format. Make sure to format for NTFS.
Since you're only partitioning and not really formatting the drive this will only take a minute or two to complete. Then you're ready to go. That's a big improvement over other drives such as the otherwise fine Iomega FireWire drive that requires a full formatting.
The digital read out on the front of the drive lets you label it and see how much space you have left. This is a great feature if you use multiple hard drives like I do. The only downside it that this feature seems to be the reason this My Studio drive is almost twice as thick as WD's My Passport drive with the same GB size. Both are highly portable but I'm not sure this feature is worth the additional bulk.
The only bad thing about this drive - and it's the reason this is a 4 star instead of a 5 - is the horrendous ironically named "WD SmartWare" backup software. The virtual CD can be unmounted now but it is still an unnecessary intrusion. The software itself eats up more RAM than anything else running on my PC. More than Explorer. More than Microsoft Office Suite. All that for limited backup functionality - you can only access backed up files through a full restore. You need to install "SmartWare" to turn off the virtual CD, label the drive and register it even if you don't want to use the drive for back up. Then it just sits on your computer eating up memory and CPU speed. The only fix is to go to Windows Control Panel and uninstall the software. This is Western Digital's Achilles Heel and they need to get it fixed.
