Tripp Lite OMNI9000LCD Digital LCD 900VA Line-Interactive UPS (8 Outlets) Review

Tripp Lite OMNI9000LCD Digital LCD 900VA Line-Interactive UPS (8 Outlets)
Average Reviews:

I purchased this UPS as a backup for my CPAP machine. It's very capable of doing the job. The LCD, and information it provides is very helpful, and appears to be accurate. You can't beat the feature set on this UPS for the price. My only real complaint is with the smell of the plastic. It will fill the room with an awful stink when this thing warms up. I'm guessing it will go away as the unit breaks in, but really shouldn't be there to begin with. I have noticed that many of the products that come from China these days have a problem with stinky plastic.

Griffin Tempo Sport Armband for iPod nano 1G, 2G (Black) Review

Griffin Tempo Sport Armband for iPod nano 1G, 2G (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Definitely not a well-made product. I have had my armband for approximately two months and the velcro is already peeling away from the neoprene. On top of that, the poor-quality stitching has broken through the neoprene in multiple locations which has left me with large holes in the band and velcro that hardly sticks. Other than that, it is really just a poorly designed item...not user-friendly at all.

Lexmark X7675 All-in-One Wireless Inkjet Kit (12V0300) Review

Lexmark X7675 All-in-One Wireless Inkjet Kit (12V0300)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lexmark made the wireless setup easy vis the enclosed computer CD installation program. I liked the automatic two sided printing too. Included in the box are extended life ink cartridges. Usually with a new printer you get limited yield cartridges.
I was able to scan pictures remotely via the wireless connection...very slick. I haven't tried the fax yet but the copy features work fine. The power is supplied via cord directly to the printer....no transformer to trip over. Print quality is good, typical ink jet. The box said the warranty is 5 years with registration. I had a Lexmark two printers ago and had trouble 3 times. Lexmark replaced the printer with a new on each time with shipping both ways at their expense.

Franklin Electronic Publishers BES-1890 Speaking Spanish-English Dictionary Review

Franklin Electronic Publishers BES-1890 Speaking Spanish-English Dictionary
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this dictionary about a month and a half and the few reviews I could find prior to buying it were not overly positive. But I bought it anyway and couldn't be happier with it. It is intuitive, very fast, and translates almost all the words I have entered. I have used it almost every day since I am attempting to move up from a high beginner to a strong intermediate in Spanish by month's end.
I have been in Buenos Aires for 11 days, with 20 to go, taking a 3 week Spanish course in a language school. I am in a low intermediate class and we have homework assignments and lots of exercises and speaking each day. I use the Franklin dictionary constantly when I don't know a word or need the equivalent in Spanish. The best part about the little computer in my opinion is the conjugations.
I have had and will have more class lessons in conjugations, so far only the present tense. When I am stuck on an irregular or any other verb I enter it into the dictionary, hit the conj key and bingo, aqui esta. Successively hitting the conj key takes you through all the tenses in all persons. While my classmates are fumbling around with their Spanish-English translation books, I have the verb, its meaning, and have already conjugated it, if applicable. It's my favorite feature and really helps me to learn the verbs and their forms.
The negatives are the rather poor audio for some of the translations (not all) and the fact that the screen is not backlit, although I have had absolutely no problem seeing it in normal or even somewhat low light.
I use it in restaurants here in Buenos Aires while I'm waiting or eating and can practice Spanish by inputting words or reading and translating phrases. It fits easily in the pocket of my shorts and I'd replace my BES 1890 immediately if anything happened to it.
If you're serious about learning espanol, or simply need a new translator, I recommend it. For the serious estudiante, it's more than worth the cost.

Disney Hannah Montana Karaoke System with Video Camera Review

Disney Hannah Montana Karaoke System with Video Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought that this would be a great gift for my 7-year-old, until I noticed the "Prop 65" warning. I looked it up and found it to be very vague. I emailed Disney to find out why it has the warning. I wanted to know if there was a dangerous chemical somewhere that can be accessed by my children. If it was somewhere that was not accessible, for example on the inside of the power cord, I would consider it since my children are not allowed to touch the wires. But if it were on the microphone or the knobs, I would not want to buy it. After several emails back and forth, Disney still has not said WHY the machine has the warning. They just assure me that it is safe and that their standards are very high with all of their products. (I do not agree because I have had some Disney-licensed products that were pieces of junk.)
I am truly disappointed because I have always been a big Disney fan, mainly due to their superior customer service. They have lost a sale -and some respect.

Archos 405 2 GB Portable Media Player (Silver) Review

Archos 405 2 GB Portable Media Player (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the 405 in September and the docking station shortly thereafter. To record t.v. you need the docking station and to download a proprietary t.v. program guide using the company supplied Archoslink software. The problem is that you can't download the tv program guide due to some defect in the Archoslink software. Archos has only told me that they have referred this problem to the engineers but I have heard nothing for a month I am not sure if this problem also effects the WiFi versions, but I would definitely not recommend buying this item until they have worked things out. Even then, the interface it very confusing and difficult to use particularly from the machine. The navigation is not at all intuitive and even once you learn the quirky system you still make a lot of mistakes at is that poorly designed.
The company web site shares the software's poor design. For example to download the Archoslink software you need to search create an account with the serial and model numbers of both the machine and the docking station, and then confirm you information and search around for the software. The web site does not save your log in and when you click on a download the archoslink software link it takes you back to the log in page. The website has not have a search function and the software is not under the downloads link where you would expect it.

The device also seems quite limited in they format of files it will play. You even need to purchase a codex to common types of files and many are not supported. There seem to be a number of similar devices out there that make a better choice. Do not be fooled by what at first seems like a low price for such a device. The added cost of the docking station and the necessary codex software significantly raise the cost and the time it takes to set up and frustration to use really add up.

Built E-LPM-WGB Laptop Porter (Wood Grain) Review

Built E-LPM-WGB Laptop Porter (Wood Grain)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I chose this laptop porter for its cool look, machine washable construction, and handy three-pocket design, but I've found other aspects of the bag to be quite handy.
My workplace, a school, provided me with an older ibook G4, which is not the lightest laptop, and my shoulders are thanking me for this new bag. Somehow, the construction and materials of this bag make everything I'm carrying in it seem lighter. The stretchy fabric and strap clips seem to absorb the shock and weight of whatever the bag has in it.
I also love how easy it is to clip or un-clip the shoulder strap -- the clips simply slide into place in holes sewn into the bag, no pinching or pressure required to remove or install. The only thing that could make this bag better would be if there was a very small outer pocket for me to slip my keys and ID into.

Western Digital My Book Studio LX 1 TB FireWire 800/USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive (Aluminum) Review

Western Digital My Book Studio LX 1 TB FireWire 800/USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive (Aluminum)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With both USB and FireWire interfaces, this is a good drive for any Mac computer. It comes with a FireWire 400/800 crossover cable, and the drive works fine on older Macs with a FireWire 400 port (though the data transfer rate isn't what it could be). The casing is solid and the drive runs smoothly and quietly without any vibration, hums, or rattles.
WD SmartWare, software with some drive management and backup utilities, comes with the MyBook. It's optional and only needed for those who would like an alternative to Apple's Time Machine backup software or a method to password protect the data on the drive. I use Apple Time Machine to back my computer up to another drive, so I haven't been tempted to use the WD SmartWare software yet. Unfortunately, the WD SmartWare is installed via a virtual CD that appears on the Mac desktop when the drive is plugged in. The virtual CD can be shown or hidden with some tinkering but, alas, it is an annoying way to distribute software when a normal install CD or download site would have sufficed. Some minor technical issues:
1. To upgrade the MyBook firmware, the drive must be connected to your computer via USB, not FireWire.
2. I originally "daisy chained" this drive to my computer through another FireWire external HD. While the drive itself worked fine, the WD SmartWare virtual CD did not appear on my desktop when the drive was connected in this fashion. Connecting the MyBook drive directly to the computer via FireWire solved this problem.

Canon Selphy CP740 Compact Photo Printer (2094B001) Review

Canon Selphy CP740 Compact Photo Printer (2094B001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been VERY pleasantly surprised at the quality of the prints generated by the Selphy 740. I have another printer I use for larger (8x10) printing & photo's but I wanted something that turned out native 4x6" prints for easy photo-albuming and spontaneous, on-the-spot giving to friends & family. (The lack of such traditional prints in this traditional form-factor is the great bane of digital photography, IMHO!)
The BEST thing about this printer is the "layered film" technology used to actually print the images. I was a bit worried when I received the printer and discovered that, rather than using ink cartridges, a spooled cassette of CMY-sequenced films are used. This mechanism always struck me as a bit wasteful but I honestly believe it DOES produce the best images, with virtually no pixelization visible in the print. There is also a FOURTH layer, which is clear, that is overlaid atop the 3 separately applied CMY layers. This clear layer gives a WONDERFUL "photographic print" feeling to the final product -- I've always disliked how inkjet printers produce prints in which it is obvious (visually & tactilely) that the ink is simply sitting on top of the paper. The uppermost "clear layer" applied by the Selphy system results in a print that is virtually indistinguishable from one printed by a photo lab.
I'm not sure what to think about other reviewers criticism that the prints come out dark -- I believe this is more a comment on the camera and/or monitor on which the images are created & viewed. I generally bump up the saturation and brightness "one click" in the printer's properties dialog before I print a photo, but I do this same thing on all printers.
I concede that $0.26 per print is SLIGHTLY on the pricey side and that you can get less expensive prints at CostCo that (might?) look a BIT better, but I for one know that I am more than likely to never actually get such photo's printed. Having this Selphy 740 printer at home, where it is easily & spontaneously available, and generating very good prints is a VERY worthwhile value to me.
Thumbs up!!
***UPDATE*** It's 3 years later and I still use this printer and am still loving the results. Yeah, it prints dark but I just make it a standard practice to use the "printer properties" to bump up the brightness by 2 notches and bump up the contrast by 1 notch. I have become the local photomart for several of my friends & family. My thumb is still up!!

Garmin nuvi 200 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin nuvi 200 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After using the popular TomTom One for six months (and being completely satisfied with it) I decided to give the latest in Garmin technology a try. Garmin's newest line of Nuvi's (the 200, 250, and 270) appears to be designed to combat the basic (and extremely popular) TomTom One, as they are designed with the utmost simplicity in mind. Garmin has finally done away with all the bells and whistles of their past GPS models and stripped down their latest releases to the bare essentials. But don't let the simplicity of the Nuvi 200 fool you, it still packs quite a punch.
The first thing I noticed upon purchasing this product is it's size...very, very small. The unit ways only 0.33 pounds (5.2 ounces) which I found very convenient. Also the Garmin Nuvi 200's wallet sized dimensions, 3.8 x 2.8 x .8 inches (W x H x D) make for easy transport from car to pocket once you have reached your destination.. Because the Garmin Nuvi 200 doesn't come with a carrying case I found the unit's basic rectangular design very handy when searching for a protective case to envelop the unit when not in use. Basically any small camera case at any department store will fit this GPS unit nicely. I found one for $7.00, a real plus considering the unusual design of the TomTom One and it's customized $30.00 carrying case, consumers (of course) had to buy separately.
The Garmin Nuvi 200 lacks the text-to-speech function of it's big brother, the Nuvi 350 and also has no MP3 technology (remember this is a basic unit). However the unit has managed to shed the little flip-up antenna that Garmin owners have been used to seeing on older models, such as the Nuvi 350. Everything is now neatly packed away and internal giving the Nuvi 200 an even sleeker look.
Enough about what the Nuvi lacks, on to what is has. Although the unit is simple in design Garmin has managed to pack in a few extras for it's customers. The Nuvi 200 has a JPEG picture viewer, a calculator, a currency converter, a unit converter, and a world clock just in case your wondering what time it is in Tokyo. Some users may use these features more than others, while others may find them plain redundant but hey...it's always nice to have extras.
The battery life is excellent compared to the TomTom One's weak 2-hour expectancy. The instruction manual brags it can last "up to 5 hours" so you won't have to scramble for the vehicle power cable as often as with other units. The Nuvi 200's 3.5 inch screen (with 320x240 pixel count) is beautiful, bright and detailed Very convenient for such a small unit.
Of course I have to mention the high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receiver that was able to locate it's position in under 30 seconds on it's first start up. I've even managed to get satellite signals while indoors, quite impressive.
The only fault I could find with the unit was (surprisingly) it's maps. Although Garmin uses NAVTEQ maps I found them very lacking compared to the TomTom (Tele Atlas) maps I'm used to. The clichéd' argument is that because Garmin is a North American based company their maps for The United States should be more accurate then the European based Tele Atlas maps which TomTom uses. This was quickly disproved by a simple drive around town. There were some streets in my home town which have been completed for over 5 years that still aren't registered by the supplied NAVTEQ maps the Nuvi 200 comes with. I never had this problem with my TomTom One.
The Garmin Nuvi 200 gets a well-deserved 4 stars. Although it's maps are sometimes lacking they were always accurate and managed to get me home safely. Garmin is a quality name in GPS and anyone looking for a simple yet powerful unit should give the Garmin Nuvi 200 a chance.
Here is what comes in the box:
- The Nuvi 200 unit that comes preloaded with maps of the lower 48 states (plus Hawaii and Puerto Rico)
- Vehicle Suction Cup Mount (instead of sticking this mount to the windshield, I break tradition and mount the suction cup to the driver's side window down near the rearview mirror then just turn it towards me. I find it is much easier to operate and it doesn't obstruct my view.)
- Vehicle Power Cable
- Dashboard Disc
- Set Up And Go Guide (not very detailed)

Epson Stylus NX510 Wireless Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer (C11CA48201) Review

The printer works fine for the most part. Good quality and the wireless network is a really nice feature so you can eliminate cables. I was actually fairly happy with it. The menu systems on the front panel are extremely crude and hard to navigate, but that was really my only gripe.
However, this printer has proven the most irritating design in one respect. When you reach a low ink level, the front control panel is completely frozen giving you a message to "Relace Ink Cartidges now".
You can no longer scan, fax, or do anything with this device until you go buy ink (can someone at epson please explain that one to me? Why can't I scan? That doesn't use any ink!!!).
Then just to make it even more irritating, if you are low in black ink (like I am) you can't even print in other colors. My status monitor just sits there on my computer telling me that my ink cartridges are low (duh, I know that by now epson thank you very much).
...and as the frustration level gets really high, do you think I can close that window so I can move on to other things? Uh...NO. That little irritating status monitor can not be closed, only minimized! So it's going to sit here on my computer until I go buy a black ink cartridge.
ARGH!!!!
I guess I didn't buy a wireless color inkete all in one printer...I bought an irritating little sister who constantly tells me "buy ink...buy ink...buy ink..."

HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-in-One Printer Review

HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought I would make what is normally the conclusion the beginning section because not everyone may have the time or the disposition to go through all these paragraphs unless actually interested in making a purchase. I am providing more detail that should support my conclusions AFTER the evaluation section.Evaluation
----------
The reviewed unit meets the claim of it being a all-in-one solution. While it is not likely that any individual user would take advantage of all its features on a regular basis, it is reassuring to know that the features are there. The supplied software and the printer's own console interface allow for a tremenduous amount of flexibility and customization. Some of the more advanced features will require an above-average level of computer expertise but, even without a lot of customization, this will be a useful, worthy printing/faxing/copying/scanning appliance.
While the superior quality of output would make this printer a good 'small office' candidate, its speed would probably disqualify it if the small office was doing any significant amount printing. I provided some personal benchmarks so that any prospective small business buyer could decide. As a 'home' printer, this comes as close to perfect as they come. I will be using it as a home printer so please do interpret my rating within that context.
A minor observation regarding 'design'. I found it interesting that some of the functions available on the touch screen are duplicated on physical buttons on the printer's console. This was striking because I actually saw this model for sale at New York's Fifth Ave. Apple store. It immediately occured to me that an Apple designer would have none of those buttons if allowed to redesign the product. This is not criticism, it's only an observation, also prompted by the fact that, for example, when specifying the number of copies to be printed, I could NOT use the physical number pad but had to punch the number on the virtual keypad displayed on the touch screen.
The strong, almost violent shaking the printer brings itself to when not on a perfectly steady surface was a little disturbing to me. I have little doubt that, if improperly placed, the printer would quickly lose its printheads alignment and it might even experience other technical trouble.
Finally, I am happy that the HP Tech support solved my Vista-related problem but it would have been better if a printer that was manufatured only a few days before I received it had an updated CD or, at least, a flyer advising Vista users how to obtain the updated driver.
Considering all of the above, the this printer gets a strong, very positive 4 stars.
_______________________________________________________________________________First impressions
-----------------
The HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-In-One Printer integrates print, copy, fax, scan document and photo-processing functions. HP supplies the printer itself, 'starter' ink cartridges, print heads and a phone wire. Ethernet or USB cables are not included. Thin manuals are provided for wireless and FAX setup. A quick installation poster is provided as well. The full 300+ manual can be downloaded from the HP site. The CD has drivers for the several supported Operating Systems and a number of additional applications such as OCR (optical character recognition).
Besides the Ethernet and USB ports, other physical IO include 2 telephone jacks in the back and slots for several types of memory cards in the front. The printer can be controlled from a PC or directly through a touch-screen color display and several buttons that generally duplicate options on the menus available through the touch-screen interface. To satisfy energy saving concerns, the printer goes to sleep if not used for a while but it can be reactivated by either touching the screen or one of the buttons or remotely from a networked workstation.Software
--------
Drivers are available for the most recent flavors of Windows (Vista, XP, 2000) and for the Mac. It can be configured to either a local printer, connected to a PC via a USB cable or as a network printer, wired (Ethernet) or wireless (802.11g). Another option (not tested by me) would be for one PC to connect the printer via USB and then share it over the network. I experienced problems installing the Vista drivers but HP's tech support addressed it by replacing the CD-supplied drivers with a version available at HP's site.
While installing the drivers, HP will also install a number of applications and services. Of these the HP Solutions Center is the most versatile. It monitors the printer's status, including the ink levels and allows for configuring printing, scanning, faxing and other capabilities such as the forwarding of documents to network folders (tested) or to email (not tested yet). In addition, the home page can be used to control fax and scan operations, to convert a graphic image to text and to launch other applications such as the HP Photosmart Essential. I posted images of the Home and Configuration screens.
I did not fully test the Photosmart Essential application yet but I expect it to meet most basic photo management and printing needs and perhaps more.
If staying with the defaults at drivers installation, HP will install other, generally unneeded or unwelcome applications and services. One of them, the HP Customer Participation Program seems to be taking hundreds of megabytes but not doing anything useful from the end-user's point of view. I found Web discussions indicating that the 'program' was guilty of a memory leak. I removed it. Another unwelcome (to me) addition is the 'Yahoo Toolbar' to my Internet Explorer which I don't use anyway. This was done without asking for my permission. I had to use Vista's Control Panel to remove it after the fact.
Finally, one 'glitch' that occured after my initial installation from the supplied HP disk had a pop-up constantly telling me that the "HP product assistant" had to be installed or updated and asking me to provide a path. Providing the path for the requested file which I found burried 3 levels deep inside the supplied CD, was not helping and the cycle kept repeating endlessly. Some Web research revealed that this was a common problem and there were not many known solutions. I was able to find at the HP site a utility that tried to remove all HP drivers software from my PC but, 4 reboots later and after re-installing the drivers, the popup returned. A call to the HP support was answered and a technician was able to address the problem after taking over my computer, performing the 'cleanup' job that I tried myself and then installing an updated version of the drivers, downloaded from the HP site. The file name for Vista 32-bit is OJP8500vA909_Full_12.exe. I will post an image showing how to get to the drivers from the HP Solution Center. The HP suppport remediation completed after about 2 hours. The HP technician stated that 'only Vista' installations experience this problem. XP or Mac users should be safe.
Print
-----
Ink-jet printing outputs clean documents even on the 'normal' resolution. Printouts can be either color or black and white, one-sided or two-sided. Print quality can be set to anything form 'general everyday printing' to presentation, photo-quality or to ink-saving 'fast/economical printing'. The supplied paper tray can be loaded with up to 250 sheets up to 'legal' size. One-sided print speed is adequate but duplex printing can be quite slow.
The print operation appears to involved a great deal of physical movement inside the printer. If placed on anything but a very steady platform, the printer tends to swing quite violently from left to right and back. This had me concerned enough to move it from its initial location.
Copy
----
The copy function allows for anything from one-sided/one-sided to two-sided/two-sided copies. As in the case of printing, two-sided copies are much slower to produce. The copy quality is good enough to make the copy almost indistinguishable from the original.
Fax
---
I did not fully test the FAX capabilities but it's worth menioning that a lot of flexibility is provided, including the ability to direct the faxes to a network folder (which I did test with the scan function) rather than having them printed. It is also possible to block 'junk' faxes by maintaining a list of the offending phone numbers.
Scanner
-------
As a scanner, one can file the output to any of up to 10 preset network folders or if when the scanning process is initiated from a PC, output can be directed to a designated user's local folder. Scanned documents can be translated to text via the integrated OCR function. My experiment with a printed document produced with Microsoft Word returned 100% accuracy for content but, as expected, the formatting (headers, footers, margins) was not properly handled.
Photo processing
----------------
Photo processing can be controlled either at the console and the interactive touch screen interface does allow for some flexibility. Input is provided by inserting one of the supported memory devices containing pictures (MMC SD, CF, XD, MS/DUO or USB). Some crude cropping and sizing is available as well as color processing - sepia or gray scale prints can be produced and the colors can be manipulated to be darker or lighter. The more flexible solution and the one more likely to be used is via the provided HP Photosmart Essential application. Either through the touch screen interface or via HP Photosmart the printer can be configured to use photo paper from either HP or 'other'...Read more›

Carrying Pouch (black) for Motorola DROID SmartPhones ***Includes Micro Fiber Cleaning Cloth***
Average Reviews:

My Motorola Droid fits in the case and there's enough room left to close the top with the drawstring. It protects the phone from dust, rain, etc. It takes a little work to get the phone out when you get a call - putting it in upside down makes it easier for me. The D-ring clip that came with it is cheap and the spring wore out in a month or so - I got a better quality D-ring at a hardware store.

This phone is totally awesome! Great display, lots of bells and whistles. If you have ever owned a cordless phone before, and the battery dies, so you open the back of the phone only to find a "battery pack". You look every where and no one carries "that" battery pack. Well..., finally Panasonic got smart and did something about that. This phone comes with plain old Nickel-Metal Hydride Rechargeable AAA Batteries! No more battery pack! In a few years when the original batteries no linger hold a charge I'll just replace them with easy to find NiMH AAA batteries.

Apple Mac Mini MC438LL/A Server Review

Apple Mac Mini MC438LL/A Server

It's been a few days since these were announced and we've already installed 30 of them here at Macminicolo. (We host them as servers in our data center.) Here is what you need to know:
1) The image above is not correct (as of 6/18/10). This mini does not have an optical drive and instead has two hard drives. You can use optical drives of other Macs on your network though.
2) The two drives total 1TB. YOu can use them separate or in RAID configurations. New in this version are the 7200RPM drives (up from 5400 in the last version.
3) Apple now officially supports 8GB of RAM in these minis. Eight GB was unofficially supported in the last version, but did work fine.
4) These minis are quiet, don't get hot, and use hardly any power. Amazing build and design went into this machine.
5) If you buy this mini and want to upgrade the RAM, Apple has made it very easy. Just twist the bottom and put in the RAM. No tools required.
6) This Mac mini comes with an unlimited license of Snow Leopard Server. No yearly seat costs, not license per user. Totally unlimited.
7) The SD card slot can read SDXC. That's not a big deal now,but will definitely be so in the future. That standard can support up to 2TB. So, as that technology comes, this mini will be future proof. (In Theory, this means you could have 3TB of data in this mini. Incredible.)
8) The video card has been upgraded and is a great addition.
9) The power brick is now inside the Mac mini. (It used to be a huge white brick nearly the size of the mini itself.) This is very much welcome.
So overall, great machine. Nice to see the nice new look.
